Motorcycle Safety Training Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a separate class for people with no experience? The class is designed for students who have never even sat on a motorcycle. All students are considered to be at the same skill level regardless of any prior experience. Even if everyone in a class is experienced, not one part of the class may be shortened or skipped. The instructor is required to see that every student has sufficient time and the proper personal attention to meet each objective in each lesson. The class is not run at the speed of the fastest learners (dragging others along), nor is it run at the speed of the slowest learners (pushing them to hurry) - it is run according to a precise schedule designed for the eager but inexperienced learner. However, students who simply cannot meet the objective of a lesson in the allowable time will be asked to withdraw. The one thing no one can teach is balance. Students who have never ridden a bicycle or anything that requires balance may or may not get their sense of balance in the time allowed. We can't separate those students and let them keep trying. Occasionally we do have to ask students to come back after they have practiced balancing. A typical class has a few students who have never had any contact with motorcycles, a majority who have had some contact but are not really "experienced", and a few who know how to ride but are getting back into it. Instructors often say it is the "never had" who are the best learners. What are the benefits of taking a class from a CMSP site?If you are under 21 years of age and you want a California motorcycle license, you must successfully complete a CMSP Basic Rider Course. Regardless of age, when you successfully complete a CMSP Basic Rider Course, the DMV will waive the riding portion of your motorcycle license examination. What do you mean "successfully complete" the course? You must pass a written and a riding exam to pass this course. What does it take to get a California motorcycle license after completing the course? After successful completion of the Basic Rider Course you will be issued a California DMV form DL389. The DL389 waives the riding test at the DMV. You will still be required to pass the DMV written test. What do I need to take the basic course? Before the start of the first classroom session you must provide proof of either a valid driver's license OR a valid learner's permit OR a certificate showing successful completion of the classroom portion of driver's education. Where do I get the motorcycle and helmet for the course? We will provide you with both the motorcycle and helmet for the class. You may optionally use your own helmet if it is in good condition, fits you properly, and is DOT approved. What size are the motorcycles? The motorcycles provided are usually from 125cc to 250 cc. What else do I need? For the classroom portion you will need to bring a pen and a notebook. For the riding portion of the course you must be wearing long pants, sturdy footwear that covers the ankles, full-fingered leather gloves and a long sleeve shirt or jacket. We do not provide these items; you must bring your own. Sunglasses come in handy on bright days, but they are not required. Rain gear may also come in handy depending on the weather conditions. What does it cost? The Basic Rider Course fee for students 20 years old and under is $150. For students 21 and over the course fee is $250. These fees are the same throughout the entire State. There is a difference in price because the State of California requires that this course be taken in order for individuals under 21 to get their motorcycle license. Because of this, the state has elected to set the price at $150. Will taking this course help with my insurance? Some of the companies that provide motorcycle insurance offer discounts to graduates of courses approved by the CMSP and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). Is the Basic Riders Course for beginners or for people who already know how to ride? Both. Although the course starts out with the basics, the skills that are taught are essential to safe riding. It is unusual for someone to complete the course without indicating improvements in their motorcycling skills and awareness. After I finish this course, will I be ready to ride? After successful completion of the course you will have been taught the basics of motorcycle riding. This is the starting place for new riders: you will need to continue practicing these skills to improve your chances of being a safe and confident motorcyclist. How do I register?Register online or call the MVLA Adult School at (650) 940-1333 for class dates and times. For information about other California sites, call the MSF at (877) RIDE-411. Riders must also be able to hold the bike up when stopping or walking the motorcycle. We have motorcycles with lower seats suitable for people who need to be closer to the ground. Can I ride my own bike (or scooter) in the basic course?Students can use their own motorcycle as long as it is 350cc or less. What happens if I have a conflict after I start a course? An absence is noted as a no-show, and you are subject to a fee of 50% of the original course fee to reschedule. No-shows are given no priority for seating. All rescheduling is done on a space available basis only. What happens if I'm late or don't show for a class?Classes start promptly! This is a state-monitored program and students are not allowed to arrive late. If you arrive late or miss a session you will be asked to leave the program without receiving a refund. Will I have to go to the DMV for my license after I pass?Yes. Upon successful completion of the class, you will be mailed a DL389 document. When presented to the DMV, the DL389 form will waive the riding portion of your motorcycle license test. You must still pass the DMV written test. Can I take the course with an out-of-state or international license?Yes, as long as your license is valid you may take our course. However, not all states recognize the California completion certificate for the issuing of the motorcycle endorsement. Check with your state's DMV regarding the required certification.
